Fetch/Grab the King! Fetch/Grab Him!
Synopsis and Significance
The name of the play is derived from a popular Iraqi song which starts with,“Jeeb al-Kaas Jeeba” (“Fetch the Cup, Fetch it”). The song first appeared on TV when the Iraqi National soccer team won the Asian Cup in 2007. The play tells the story of an authoritarian and greedy king who tells lies, makes empty promises, and is concerned only with enriching himself and promoting his self-interest. The king is kidnapped by one of his subjects and forced to walk the streets in disguise to witness the violence, misery, suffering, and fear of his people. The play is a satirical comedy that criticizes the Iraqi government for its corruption and incompetence following the Iraq war in 2003.
